Melung Thakali in Baluwatar offers more than just a meal. Recommended for its comforting atmosphere, the restaurant provides a grounding experience after the pace of city life. The dishes served convey not only flavour but they are food presented as a story on a plate.

From the outside, Melung Thakali is inviting, and once inside, its magic becomes evident. The space draws inspiration from the serene villages of Mustang and Melung in Dolakha, with every corner echoing a piece of that heritage. Each room is named after a ward from Melung - Ghyang, Sukathokar, Bhedpu, and others. The walls are adorned with traditional textures, wood, and stone, evoking the feeling of being in a Himalayan home.

While the food was being prepared, children could be seen laughing in the play area, while a group of professionals held a casual meeting in one of the cosy rooms. The atmosphere suggested that the place functioned as more than just a restaurant - it served as a community space.

The food arrived, offering a sensory journey back to the roots. The lentils were smoky and smooth, the achaar had just the right kick, and the trout was fresh, well-spiced, and cooked to tender perfection. Every ingredient - from the rice to the turmeric - carried a story, with ingredients sourced directly from Dolakha: local, honest, and rich in flavour.

Owner Basanta Lama, also the ward chairperson in Melung and founder of the Burger House chain, has poured his heart into this place. His mission: To bring a piece of his village to the city and give people not just a place to eat, but a place to remember where they come from.

Near the exit, a motto painted by the door reads: 'Charge your body inside, and your car outside.' It might make one laugh, but it's true. Melung Thakali offers more than a meal - it provides nourishment, grounding, and a brief escape, just a few turns away from the city's buzz.
