The prime minister, taking a controversial step, recommended the dissolution of the country's Lower House on December 20. This was then swiftly approved by President Bidya Devi Bhandari.

Other political parties, including Nepal Communist Party (NCP)'s Dahal-Nepal faction, have condemned the dismantling of parliament.

Nepali Congress had been preparing to stage demonstrations in 165 electoral constituencies across the nation today. NC president Sher Bahadur Deuba urged all to take part in the protest against dissolution of the House and untimely call for elections.
