1 killed, 9 injured in Rukum jeep accident



RUKUM: A person died and nine others sustained injuries after the jeep they were travelling on met with an accident in Banphikot Rural Municipality-6 of Rukum district on Wednesday.

The deceased has been identified as Khumbu Khatri (29) of Banphikot Rural Municipality-7 while his wife Amrita Khatri (27), and his son Hidan Khatri (7) sustained critical injuries, according to police.

Others injured in the incident are Prakash Nepali (35), Niruta Khatri (20) and Bal Bahadur Nepali (40), Raj Kumar Khatri (26) and a baby girl Manju Khatri, all the residents of Banphikot Rural Municipalty-12, Ramesh Khatri (25) of Aathbiskot Municipality-9, and Man Bahadur Bista (38), of Aathbiskot Municipality-12 in the district.

The incident occurred when the jeep (Lu 1 Ja 2638) en route from Musikot Khalanga of West Rukum to Aathbiskot met with an accident at Magma yesterday evening, according to the District Police Office, Rukum.

The injured were rushed to the Salle-based District Hospital  where they have been undergoing treatment while the critically injured mother and son duo have been sent to Nepalgunj-based health institution for further treatment, informed police.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Rajendra Prasad Dhamala at the Rukum District Police Office blamed the accident on overcrowding condition beyond the capacity of the jeep.

Meanwhile, police have detained the four-wheeler driver for further investigation into the incident, informed DSP Dhamala.
