KATHMANDU: As uncertainty about the promulgation of the statute grows day after day, ten different youth organisations aligned to major political parties today announced that they will launch a joint-campaign to exert pressure on the political parties to complete the task of writing the statute without failing its May 28 deadline.

Announcing their campaign at a joint-press meet at the Young Communist League’s central office in Paris Danda today, they asserted that the new constitution should be “progressive, socialism-oriented people’s new constitution based on federalism.” They also demanded that the stakeholders should work under tight schedule.

The first phase of the campaign is scheduled to begin from March 21 with a rally from Ratna Park to New Baneshwor. They also plan to submit a memorandum to the chairman of the Constituent Assembly.

The meeting also decided to submit the memorandum to the minister responsible for the transparency of the Youth and Sports Ministry and Youth Policy.

Addressing the press conference, YCL convener Ganeshman Pun, said the youth wanted to challenge those who are against federalism and ‘progressive constitution’.

He also said that the youths today agreed to break down all the barriers between them and the political parties and move forward for the sake of the nation and the people.

General Secretary of Nepal Tarun Dal (NTD) Puspa Parajuli said the youths have decided to lead a crusade after the leaders failed to preserve the achievements made by the people through sacrifices in the past.

He said that the youth leaders have found none of the party leaders and members of the Constituent Assembly seriously engaged in drafting the constitution. “Cashing in on the situation, many national and foreign powers are plotting against Nepal and the new constitution,” he said, adding, “We warn our leaders at this crucial moment of Nepal’s history to take heed of this.” He also said efforts are on to include other youth wings of all the 24 parties in the CA in the campaign.

YCL convener Pun, general secretary of NTD Parajuli, Vice president of Youth Association-Nepal Dilu Panta, vice-president of Nepal Revolutionary Youth Association Ukesh Kawan and general secretary of Progressive Youth Association-Nepal Hari Bansha Mainali, among others, signed the joint statement. President of Tarai Madhesh Youth Front Krishna Kumar Singh, president of Madheshi Youth Forum (MYF) Yogendra Raya Yadav, general secretary of MYF-Democratic Ram Awatar Thakur, general secretary of Youth Forum Nepal Anju Jha and president of Nepal National Youth Federation Purna Man Shrestha also signed for the working alliance.

All the youth leaders had expressed their commitment to work jointly for the timely statute urging all the people to support for their cause.
