Kathmandu, February 6

At least eleven persons, including seven Nepali Army personnel were killed and 12 others were injured when a microbus met with an accident at Madanpur-8 of Nuwakot district today.

According to Chief District Officer of Nuwakot Umesh Dhakal, the vehicle (Ba 1 Ja 7583) was heading towards Trishuli from Kathmandu when the accident occurred at Keurini of Madanpur VDC at around 1:30pm.

A total of 23 passengers — 18 NA recruits and five civilians — were on board when the van fell 300 metres below the road, Dhakal said.

Among the deceased — eight people— four armymen and four civilians — died on the spot, whereas three soldiers succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment in Kathmandu, according to Army Spokesperson Tara Bahadur Karki.

Spokesperson Karki further said the recruits were recently selected for NA service and were undergoing training at the Trishuli-based military training centre. They were returning to Trishuli for training after visiting their families in Kathmandu during the weekend.

The reason behind the accident is yet to be ascertained. Names and other details of the victims are yet to be announced.

Two teams of Nepali Army — from Nuwakot and Nagarjun of Kathmandu — were rushed to the incident site for rescue operation. Earlier, Police personnel and locals had carried out rescue work rights after the accident.

Some wounded people were airlifted from Kakani, Nuwakot to Chhauni-based Military Hospital of the Nepali Army, while others were ferried by public vehicles to Kathmandu for treatment.
