1,178 candidates forfeit deposit after failing to secure 10 pc votes

The security deposit of 1,178 candidates vying for various posts was seized due to their failure to garner 10 per cent of the total votes in the second round of local level elections held on June 28 in Jhapa.
As many as 3,340 persons from eight municipalities and seven rural municipalities had contested the polls for 685 posts. Of the 510,216 voters in the district, 372,840 cast their vote in the election.
The deposit of 154 candidates was forfeited at Mechinagar Municipality, while 136 lost their deposit in Arjundhara and 128 in Shivasatakshi municipalities. Likewise, 104 candidates in Bhadrapur, 84 in Kankai, 80 in Damak, 73 in Gauradaha, 78 in Birtamode, 57 in Kachankawal lost their deposits. Likewise, 46 candidates in Gaurigunj Rural Municipality, 37 in Jhapa, 61 in Barhadashi, 71 in Kamal, 54 in Buddhashanti and 23 in Haldibari rural municipalities lost their security deposit in the district,
