16 NWPP cadres arrested

Sixteeen workers of the Nepal Workers’ and Peasants’ Party were arrested from Indrachowk area while taking out a rally against the February 1 royal takeover, the party said. Those who were arrested by the police include Ramesh Thapa Shrestha, Narman Maharjan, Kiran Singh, Surya Bhakta Twati, Dharma Datta Pandey, Top Bahadur Karki, Purushottam Tamakhu, Mahendra Shahi, Dharma Dangol, Krishna Bhakta Lavaju, Sailesh Dangol, Bhaklal Duwal, Rajbir Dangol, Jagatman Awal, Gangaram Jyakhwa and K P Chhusyaki. The demonstrators had demanded the withdrawal of the royal takeover and the state of emergency, restoration of the House of Representatives, guarantee of press freedom and immediate release of the detained leaders and human right activists. The NWPP has condemned the police interference in the peaceful demonstration. The party said it will continue to organise demonstrations until democracy is restored.
