GAIGHAT, AUGUST 17
The district court of Udayapur has handed down its verdict against the 20 persons convicted of vandalising the homes of the mayor and deputy mayor two years ago.
A single bench of judge Krishna Prasad Subedi passed the verdict on the case, giving 3 months' prison term to each of the convicted persons and fine for the damage caused. The convicted include Chandra Khatri, Hem Sunuwar, Chhetra Danuwar, Subhash Danuwar, Dil Bahadur Thapa and Santa Bahadur Magar of Katari.
Except the 20 persons convicted, others who were included in the chargesheet have been given the clean chit citing lack of enough incriminating evidence.
Similarly, while one person was spared punishment on account of his age, the case against another person, who is dead, was scrapped. In May, 2 years ago, a group of locals had attacked the houses of then mayor Kaji Shrestha and deputy mayor Bhim Kumari Raut and other municipality staff over vacating an unregistered land plot. The incident had caused damage to property worth around 10 million rupees.
