23 killed as floods wreak havoc in Tarai districts

KATHMANDU: At least 23 people were killed and hundreds of families were displaced in floods and landslides triggered by incessant rainfall across the country on Friday night.

According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, six persons were killed in Sunsari as floods wreaked havoc in the district. Four persons were killed in Sindhuli, four in Banke and one person each in Morang and Jhapa districts.

At least three elderly people went missing in flood at Sundar Haraincha in Morang district, MoHA’s spokesperson Joint Secretary Deepak Kafle said.

Six bodies were fished out from the swollen streams in Sunsari while hundreds of families were displaced, he added.

Jhapa, Morang Sunsari, Sapttari, Siraha, Sarlahi, Rautahat, Banke, Bardiya and Dang were the worst affected by flood.

Hundreds of houses have been submerged in Morang. Biratnagar airport has been closed after flood water gushed into the airport area.

The government has mobilised Nepal Police, Nepali Army and APF personnel for rescue and recovery work, according to MoHA.
