More than 4 million votes cast in phase II civic polls invalid: EC

The Election Commission said that 4,380,271, (about 13 per cent ) votes cast in the second phase of local level elections were found invalid.

The second phase of local level elections were held in 334 local levels of 35 districts of Provinces 1, 5 and 7.

Out of 6,450,648 voters in those provinces, 4,935,471, that is around 76.51 per cent cast their votes in the elections, according to data provided by the EC.

The EC said that 22.72 per cent votes cast in the local levels of Kapilvastu district were found invalid. This was the highest percentage of invalid votes among the 35 districts where the second phase of local level elections took place on June 28. There are 286,550 eligible voters in the district.

Likewise, 16.39 or 342,889 votes cast in Kailali district were invalid. The EC said 16.14 per cent or 47,8,748 votes cast in Morang district were invalid. Similarly, 15.81 percent or 397,875 votes cast in Rupandehi district were invalid.

The EC said that Sunsari district had 13.91 per cent invalid votes, Kanchanpur had 13.32 per cent and  Nawalparasi had 13.61 per cent invalid votes.

Data shows that 5.62 per cent or 4,994 votes cast in Gulmi district were invalid, which was the lowest among the 35 districts. Likewise, 6.14 percent or 51,002 votes cast in Palpa district were invalid.  The EC said 8.46 percent votes cast in Arghakhanchi  district were invalid.
