5,000 rupees to visit Dhankuta landfill site

Dhankuta, July 17

Any organisation or institution interested in observing a landfill site with a garden constructed by Dhankuta Municipality will have to pay Rs 5,000.

The municipality decided to charge Rs 5,000 for organisations wanting to visit the landfill site constructed in 40 ropani land. After the Cabinet handed over the right to used land to the municipality ten years ago, the municipality had constructed a beautiful garden above the garbage collection centre. The landfill site was built at a cost of Rs 21 million.

The landfill site has become a model across the country. Once visitors pay the entry fee, the municipality guides them by providing information about the landfill site, tap conservation, drinking water and sewage system, bus park, bathing centre, community health centre and plastic pond in a dry area.

According to Dhankuta Municipality Deputy Mayor Shakuntala Basnet, the municipality earns around Rs 4 million from the sale of old wires, paper, iron, zinc sheets, glass and plastic disposed by households every year.

Deputy Mayor Basnet said the Ministry of Local Development had rewarded the municipality with Rs One million after it bagged the title of the first model municipality last year.

Mayor Chintan Tamang said the municipality was able to save funds for conservation of the site and its improvement from the money earned from the project.
