Police arrested 56 fugitives convicted in various cases in Kaski district during August as part of efforts to bring absconding offenders within the reach of the law.
According to the District Police Office, Kaski, the arrests included 40 men and 16 women who had been convicted by courts but had evaded serving their sentences.
Police said the arrested convicts were handed over to the concerned courts for enforcement of their prison terms and recovery of outstanding fines and compensation. The operation resulted in the enforcement of 11 years, three months and 27 days of prison sentences and the recovery of Rs22.89 million.
The fugitives had been convicted in cases involving cheque dishonour, financial transactions, banking offences, vehicular deaths and indecent behaviour, among other crimes.
Police data show that 67 fugitives were arrested in July, indicating continued efforts to track down and detain absconding convicts.
The District Police Office also reported the arrest of 115 people in connection with ongoing investigations during August.
A total of 164 crime-related cases were registered in Kaski during the month, including 20 serious and heinous offences, nine cases involving women, children and senior citizens, 17 economic crimes, and 118 other offences, police said.
