6 hurt in cops’ bid to open road

RAUTAHAT: Six persons were injured when police fired tear gas shells to disperse agitators at Bhediya on the Gaur-Chandranigahpur road in Rautahat today.

Bhediya locals had obstructed the road by placing logs since the morning to protest the detention of two students by the police. They had clashed with the police who reached there to clear the blockade. The police fired eight tear gas canisters to quell the agitation.

The blocked road was cleared and traffic resumed after a couple of hours following the police intervention at 8 am.

Nisun Khatun, Islamun Khatun, Jehari Khatun, Bhuili Khatun, Janab Khatun and Ali Akhtar Khatun were injured in the police action. They are undergoing treatment in District Hospital Gaur.

There was a scuffle when locals enquired Ram Ekwal Yadav, headmaster of Shree Secondary School in Bhediya, about the news of misuse of Rs 4 lakh meant for scholarship on Wednesday.

Police had held ninth graders Firoj Mansuri and Shek Mustak on the charge of mistreating the principal. the local residents said they would continue to disrupt the traffic until the students were released. They have also accused the police of not trying to solve the problem but adding fuel to fire.

Superintendent of Police in Rautahat Ghanananda Bhatt maintained that the road could not be obstructed in any pretext.

“The police will be compelled to use force to clear such blockade and the agitators should be responsible for any untoward outcome,” he warned.
