77 pc voter turnout in final phase of local polls: EC

KATHMANDU: The third phase of local level elections held on September 18 witnessed 77 per cent voters turnout in Province 2, confirmed the Election Commission in its latest update.

This phase of local level elections attracted record turnout in comparison to the 71 per cent and 73.69 per cent in first and second phase of civic polls respectively.

The elections were held in 136 local levels of eight districts in Province 2.

Organising a press conference as soon as the voting concluded, the Commission had estimated around 73 per cent voter turnout in the final round of local polls, yesterday.

The Joint Election Operation Centre, under the EC said, Rautahat witnessed the highest number of voter turnout with 80.4 per cent whereas Mahottari had the least with 73.3 per cent.

"Of the total 2,052,009 voters in eight districts of Province 2, 1,040,264 women and 1,011,729 men cast their ballot," said Surya Prasad Aryal, Information Officer at the EC adding, “The number of women voters exceeds men by 28, 535 this time.”

“Likewise, as many as 16 third-gendered persons also cast their votes in the final round of local polls including nine in Saptari, one in Sarlahi, two in Bara and four in Parsa districts,” shared Aryal expressing happiness over the successful conclusion of local polls.

Of the 136 local levels, the counting of votes has already started in 89 local levels including Birgunj Metropolis and Jitpur Simara Sub-Metropolis, informed Aryal. Preparations are underway to count votes in remaing local levels as well.

The final round of civic polls was held in 136 local levels including one metropolitan city, three sub-metropolitan cities, 73 municipalities and 59 rural municipalities of eight districts in Province 2.

The Commission had set up 2,166 polling stations and 3,578 poling centres for the third phase of local elections.

A total of  2,664,950 eligible voters will elect 6,627 local body representatives from the third phase of local level elections.
