Absconding rhino poacher arrested, sent to jail

CHITWAN: A convicted rhino poacher, who was on the run for years, has been recently arrested and sent to the jail.

On May 30, 2012, the Chitwan National Park had convicted Durga Rana Magar along with Khadga Narayan Mahato of poaching a one-horned rhinoceros and trading on the pachyderm's precious horn.

A case against them was filed at the CNP on October 13, 2009, according to the Chief Conservation Officer at CNP, Ram Chandra Kandel.

The CNP had slapped 15 years in prison and a penalty of Rs 1, 00,000 on the duo.

Magar, who hails from Kolhuwa of Nawalparasi, had managed to flee, while Mahato was arrested and sent to the jail to serve the sentence.

The CNP said Magar, who had been dodging the law enforcement agencies and was hiding in Nepal and abroad since his conviction, was arrested on Thursday after receiving a tip-off about his whereabouts.

The 42-year-old was sent to the Chitwan District Prison in Bharatpur on Friday.

According to the CNP, 100 convicted rhino poachers are still at large.

The CNP has not reported any incident of rhino poaching in the past three years.
