Kathmandu, May 14:

A former SC justice and civil society leaders today urged the government to take actions against those who attempted to suppress the Jana Andolan-II. They also sought punishment for those involved in suppressing protests during the 1990 pro-democracy movement.

“The government should implement the recommendations of the Mallik commission report prepared in 1990 in addition to implementing the report that is being prepared by the Rayamajhi Commission,” said former SC judge Laxman Prasad Aryal at a programme held to launch a book by Gopal Siwakoti Chintan on the Malik Commission.

Rights activist Padma Ratna Tuladhar and a minister of the interim government after the 1990 movement, Nilambar Acharya, also demanded action be taken against those involved in suppressing the two mass movements. Legal expert Dr Shankar Kumar Shrestha said the non-implementation of the recommendations of the Mallik Commission was an act of impunity.

Dr Devendra Raj Pandey, senior advocate of the SC of India, Colin Gonsalves and Dr Sundar Mani Dixit also sought action against those guilty of thwarting the stir.

‘Oust Malego’

Kathmandu: The judicial commission formed to look into the State suppression of the stir on Sunday recommended the suspension of Narayan Gopal Malego, the director general of Department of Information. Also on Sunday, the commission appointed Baburam Regmi as its spokesperson. —HNS
