Alleged mastermind behind Rajpur bombing incident Mahatab Alam remanded to judicial custody

RAUTAHAT: Rautahat District Court has remanded the alleged mastermind behind the Rajpur bombing incident, Mohammad Mahatab Alam, to judicial custody at Gaur prison, on Sunday.

Last week, prime accused Mahatab had been presented at the district court, following his arrest by the Janakpurdham-based provincial police office, with the assistance of Indian police from Motihari, India.

Following the decision, Mahatab Alam, brother of the former member of parliament Mohammad Aftab Alam, has been remanded to judicial custody and taken to Gaur jail for further investigation, said Superintendent of Police (SP) Siddhi Bikram Shah.

Mahatab Aalam has been accused of gruesome murder and burning alive the victims of the 2008 Rajpur bomb explosion incident. It has been known that some people were working to prepare a bomb to disrupt the election results of the 2008 Constituent Assembly elections under the instructions of the notorious Alam duo, in which the Nepali Congress leader too was contesting. Due to some technical error, on the eve of the election day, the bomb in preparation went off, seriously injuring those involved.

As many as eleven persons, including Alam duo, believed to have been involved in the incident have been charged with murdering 18 persons by dumping them in a brick kiln. More so, following Rautahat District Court's order, suspended MP Aftab Alam is currently being held at Nakkhu jail in Kathmandu.

Among those charged with murder, five have been apprehended by the police while six others accused are still on the run.
