Army frees visually impaired detainee

Pokhara, January 7:

The Royal Nepalese Army, western division headquarters, Pokhara, today released a visually impaired person, Chiranjibi Poudel, in the presence of a human rights activist.

Security personnel had arrested him last night from the gate of Prithvi Narayan Campus, uspecting him of being a Maoist cadre.

Organising a press conference, spokesperson for the headquarters Uttam Rupakheti, handed over the blind person to Ramesh Pokharel, chairman of Blinds’ Union, Kaski, in the presence of Sachit Raj Mainali, representative of the National Human Rights Commission.

Poudel is a resident of Gajehada VDC of Kapilvastu.

The All Nepal National Independent Students’ Union - Revolutionary (ANNISU-R) had appointed Poudel, a student of B Ed third year at the PN Campus, to the post of vice-secretary without his permission, Rupakehti said. He was associated with the union for the past year.
