The Department of Commerce, Supplies, and Consumer Protection in its recent crackdown on three godowns of alcoholic beverage retrieved a huge cache of expired beer worth Rs 8.2 million. The department seized nearly 3,000 cartons of date-expired beer in the course of market monitoring carried out on Tuesday and yesterday.

According to a DoCSCP press release, beer of different brands including Bahrasinghe, Tuborg, Mustang, Nepal Ice, Carlsberg, and Gorkha, all popular beer brands of Nepal, were seized by the authorities after finding that the expiry date printed on the bottles of alcoholic beverages was way past.

The department on February 14 had seized 2,100 cartons of Barhasinge beer stored inside three godowns of Climax Trading Company located at Dhumbarahi. The CTC is a dealer of Yak Brewing Company that produces Barhasinge beer, which is a popular brand. The 650 ml and 330 ml bottled beer whose market price is Rs six million, are now sealed by the authorities.

Similarly, as many as 355 cartons of date-expired beer were seized from a godown of Sanskar Traders in Sinamangal, and additional 302 cartons of beer from a godown of CK Trading in the same place on Tuesday. Authorities had found different brands of beers such as Tuborg, Mustang, Nepal Ice, Carlsberg, Gorkha from these two godowns.

The DoCSCP said these date expired products were mostly circulated in weddings and other functions at party palaces in the valley.
