'Chances of 3 elections in 14 months slim for want of laws'
KATHMANDU: Chief Election Commissioner Ayodhi Prasad Yadav on Thursday expressed his dissatisfaction that the government failed to draft laws necessary to hold the elections.
Speaking at the Reporters' Club Nepal in Kathmandu, Yadav stressed that possibility of holding elections at all three levels within next 14 months as required by the Constitution was decreasing due to the same.
Just on Wednesday, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal had proposed to hold local polls in April next year. But, the top election official today said it may not be possible if the laws were not ready on time.
The Commission is committed and ready to hold elections anytime in a fair manner, he maintained and demanded that the Local Elections Act, 1991 must be amended for timely local elections.
If the local elections were to be held based on the previous administrative distribution, there would be no problem, he said and added that various problems might arise for the same if the Constitution amendment bill tabled yesterday was passed by the House.
Likewise, the nation has to be redivided into 165 constituents to hold the federal elections, he said.
He said New Voters’ List Act, the Party Registration Act, the Electoral Offences and Punishment Act among others also need to be amended.
