Twenty-six-year-old Ramila Kumari BK from Badimalika Municipality-9, Bajura, is struggling in a bed at Bir Hospital in Kathmandu due to financial hardship. Ramila, who has kidney problems, has been receiving treatment in the hospital bed.
Ramila's problems began suddenly two years ago with severe pain and swelling in her limbs, leading her to Bir Hospital in Kathmandu. She has since been treated at both Bir Hospital and Patan Hospital, and is currently undergoing treatment for kidney issues at Bir Hospital, requiring dialysis and other treatments.
Initially, she was diagnosed with arthritis, which gradually affected her kidneys, leading to her prolonged hospital stay, according to her husband, Prakash BK. Despite managing household expenses, including children's education and sustenance through farming, Prakash now faces significant financial difficulties due to his wife's two-year-long illness.
Living in costly Kathmandu and affording food and his wife's dialysis has put the family in a financial strains, Prakash explained. Due to a lack of funds, Ramila's treatments have been halted. Since 1st Shrawan of Nepali month, Ramila has been undergoing dialysis twice a week. Each dialysis session is costly, and lifelong, adding to their financial strain, he added.
For two years, they managed with help and loans from relatives, but now they are in dire straits. The family is appealing for help, as they have no health insurance, and putting Ramila's treatment in limbo.
Without a source of income, they face severe difficulties in affording food and dialysis in Kathmandu, as well as affecting their children's education. Ramila's husband Prakash BK, their 11-year-old daughter, and 5-year-old son are currently accompanying her in Kathmandu.
