BAJURA, FEBRUARY 1
A 22-year-old woman from Bajura has survived a life-threatening childbirth complication after doctors at Bajura District Hospital performed emergency surgery nine hours after a rare childbirth complication.
The woman, Sitna Mahatara (Rokaya) of Migu, Ward No. 5 of Swamikartik Khapar Rural Municipality, was brought to the district hospital following referrals from local health facilities. Although the baby had already died inside the womb, the medical team succeeded in saving the mother.
The surgery was conducted by a team led by MDGP Dr. Ashish Karki, who said that surviving such a condition after a prolonged delay is uncommon. He said the woman is now in stable condition and out of immediate danger.
According to the hospital, the fetus was in a transverse position, with hand prolapse and fetal death occurring inside the womb. As this was her third pregnancy, the hand emerged first and became stuck, leading to serious complications.
Sitna said labor pain began around 9 a.m. while she was at home, after which the baby's hand came out. She was first taken to the local Migu health post and then referred to Kolti Hospital. Due to the lack of surgical services there, she was later sent to Bajura District Hospital.
The journey took several hours because of difficult terrain. Chief District Officer Dorendra Niraula said efforts were made to arrange air evacuation, but she was ultimately transported by road as evening approached.
Doctors said the woman suffered severe pain for more than nine hours before receiving surgery and had internal bleeding at the time of admission. Medical staff noted that such cases carry a high risk of complications, including excessive bleeding, infection, and uterine rupture.
Family members and health workers said similar cases in the area have previously resulted in maternal deaths due to delayed access to medical care. They stressed that geographical remoteness and limited maternal health services continue to pose serious risks for pregnant women in Bajura.
