Bandhs throw life out of gear in Tarai

Rautahat, April 28:

Normal life was affected in the districts of Makawanpur, Bara, Parsa, Rautahat, Chitwan, Siraha, Saptari, Sunsari and Morang due to general strikes called by different organisations.

The sixth day of the indefinite general strike called by the Chure Bhawar Ekta Samaj (CBES) affected normal live in the northern part of Rautahat district.

Vehicular movement remained halted on Mahendra Highway while business houses and academic institutions remained shut. Some vehicles were taken to their destinations under security forces’ escort.

CBES activists even stopped vehicles carrying wedding processions. No untoward incident occurred during the bandh today, the Area Police Office (APO) in Chandranigahapur said.

The bandh also partially affected life in Nijgadh, Simra and Amlekhgunj bazaars of Bara district.

Meanwhile, some 100 vehicles that had been stranded at Nijgadh were sent to their destinations under security escort, the Nijgadh APO said.

A report from Hetauda said, the one-day general strike called by the Narayani Regional Coordination Committee of the All Nepal Transport Workers’ Association (ANTWA), affected lives in Bara, Parsa, Rautahat, Makwanpur and Chitwan districts of Narayani Zone.

The ANTWA had announced the strike to press the authorities concerned to fulfil their demands, including providing appointment letters to transport workers, guarantee of employment, provision of bonus and life insurance of Rs 500,000 each to transport workers.

Another report from Siraha said normal life was affected in different Tarai districts including Siraha, Saptari, Sunsari and Morang today due to the two-day general strike called by a group named Tarai Tigers.

The Tarai Tigers group had demanded release of two of their activists who were arrested from Saptari a few days ago.

However, the Saptari Appellate Court, acting on a habeas corpus petition yesterday ordered released of Arjun, the group’s Saptari incharge and activist Mahesh Mahato.

Vehicles stayed off the road in Rajbiraj, Inaruwa, Biratnagar and Itahari.
