Bhattarai expresses support for Madhesi,Tharus' demands

Kathmandu, September 24

Unified CPN-Maoist leader Baburam Bhattarai today issued a press release urging the government and protesting Madhesi and Janajati forces to announce a détente immediately and find a negotiated settlement of constitutional issues.

He expressed solidarity with the issues raised by the protesting forces saying his party’s note of dissent on the new constitution was similar to the demands of the protesting forces.

Expressing deep concern about the Tarai unrest, he said failure on the part of political forces to adequately address issues raised during various movements including people’s war, popular movement, Madhes movement, Tharuhat movement were at the root of the current agitation and protests in the Tarai.

Bhattarai regretted his failure as Chairperson of the Constitutional-Political Dialogue and Consensus Committee to take all on board the constitution making process. He said the political problems could not be resolved through force.

“Mountains and the hills cannot stay indifferent when the Tarai-Madhes, home to half of the country’s population continues to burn,” Bhattarai added.

He condoled the deaths of those who were killed during protests and wished speedy recovery to the injured persons.
