Big 3 discuss amendment, June 14 elections with RJP Nepal

KATHMANDU: Three major parties -- Nepali Congress, CPN-UML and CPN Maoist Centre -- on Tuesday held discussion with Rastriya Janata Party Nepal on the proposed amendment to the Constitution, local level elections in four provinces scheduled for June 14 and increasing the number of local levels in the Tarai districts.

The leaders of the four parties met at the Prime Minister's official residence in Baluwatar today.

On the occasion, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal pointed out the need for unity among parties for the modification of local levels, and said the government was making efforts to endorse the Constitution Amendment Bill, according a statement issued by the PM's Secretariat.

The leaders of three major parties told the RJP that they will hold further talks to amend the Constitution with a political understanding in order to bring the parties affiliated with the Federal Alliance to the election process.

Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal from the CPN Maoist Centre, Sher Bahadur Deuba and DPM Bimalendra Nidhi from the Nepali Congress, Bam Dev Gautam and Subas Chandra Nembang from the CPN-UML and Mahantha Thakur, Rajendra Mahato and Mahendra Raya Yadav among others from the RJP Nepal took part in the meeting.

The meeting assigned Prime Minister Dahal and Nepali Congress President Deuba to hold talks with the main opposition CPN-UML and other stakeholders in order to forge agreement and do homework for two-third majority to amend the Constitution, the Rastriya Samachar Samiti reported.

The government is preparing to table a proposal to amend the Constitution in the Parliament meeting scheduled for May 18.
