Biratnagar, Birgunj promoted to Metropolitan Cities

KATHMANDU: The Cabinet meeting held on Wednesday has announced to promote Biratnagar and Birgunj sub-metropolitan cities into metropolitan cities.

According to the Ministry of Local Development, the newly elevated metropolis would have the same number of wards and border as they were when the sub-metropolis.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Federal Affairs and Local Development Bijaya Kumar Gachhadar told THT that the government took the decision to upgrade the two cities as metropolitan cities without changing any boundaries. “All wards of the two cities will remain in the metropolitan cities. This decision respects the Supreme Court’s recent stay order,” he said.

In view of the possibilities of future expansion based on area, population, infrastructures, public demand, and constitutional provision needed for the new metropolitan cities, the cabinet meeting took the decision to this effect, stated the Rastriya Samachar Samiti quoting Rudrasingh Tamang, Ministry's Spokesperson.

The decision was taken based on the recommendation of the discussion with political parties, on availability of physical infrastructures, and demand of the local people.

The Ministry has expressed its confidence that these two new metropolitan cities would be established as the model ones advancing further in the economic areas.
