Biratnagar readying for provincial capital status

As the Biratnagar aspires to become the headquarters of Province 1, the metropolis  has focused on developing necessary infrastructure to consolidate its chances for the title.

This issue had topped the election agenda during the second phase of local level elections in the province.

According to Mayor Bhim Parajuli, they are planning to construct a provincial hall and a communication village named after NC leader late Tarini Prasad Koirala. “As for the provincial hall, we are searching for land,” said Parajuli, adding that around 20 million rupees has been allocated for upgrading the stadium in Biratnagar-19.

Besides, Parajuli informed that the metropolis has set aside 4 million rupees to promote the ancient palace area of mythical Hindu King Birat into a tourism site. As for the provincial conference hall, the government has allocated 350 million rupees.

Apart from the above-mentioned, the exhibition hall, bypass road, special economic zone, existing airport, bus park and ring road are often cited by locals as facilities that qualify Biratnagar for provincial capital.
