SARLAHI, MAY 12

Bird flu has been confirmed in a duck farm in Godaita Municipality, Sarlahi.

The virus was detected in JK Livestock and Poultry Farm House of Bakainiya, Godaita Municipality. A team deployed by the Livestock Department of the government has been observing the farm house and the vicinity following the confirmation of bird flu.

According to Dr Bijaya Chaudhary of the team, 382 of 550 ducks at the farm house have already died. Chaudhary, who is a veterinary doctor at National Livestock Reproduction Centre Lahan, was deployed at the farm by the department today.

"There isn't any farm or human settlement near the infected farm, and we haven't heard of any cases of fowls dying in the nearby areas, we are preparing to disinfect the farm house and cull the ducks."

The farm owner said ducks in his farm had started dying about 10 days ago. He had contacted the government's expert centre in Malangawa. The specimen of dead ducks from the farm had been sent to Bharatpur for test and then to Kathmandu, where bird flu infection was confirmed on Tuesday.
