Birgunj shut down demanding provincial headquarters

BIRGUNJ: Agitated locals have shut down Birgunj Metropolitan City from Sunday demanding to name the city as headquarters of Province 2. Birgunj Struggle Committee, which has been in protest for one month, called for the bandh.

The government had declared Janakpur as provisional headquarters of Province 2 on January 17 that has created the dissatisfaction among locals in Birgunj.

The protesters have been burning tyres and staging the demonstration since early morning in various places of Birgunj including Ghantaghar, Maisthan, Murli, Powerhouse Chok and Pratima Chok.

The public transportation services have come to a halt and protesters have shut down the businesses and educational institutions in the city.

Meanwhile, Birgunj Struggle Committee's Sub-coordinator Rajkumar Gupta said that the bandh was a warning to the maiden Provincial Assembly meeting of Province 2 to be held in Janakpur on Sunday.

Likewise, CPN-UML leader Basruddin Ansari said that the ongoing protest will be made even stronger in coming days.
