The body of an 11-year-old girl who was swept away by floodwaters while returning from school in Makawanpur was found on Friday, three days after she went missing.

The body of Sumitra Bholan, daughter of Tikaram Bholan of Bastipur, Hetauda Sub-Metropolitan City-19, was recovered from the Rapti River at Lamitar in Manahari Rural Municipality-3, about 7km downstream from where she was swept away, according to police.

Sumitra was among four girls swept away by a sudden surge in the Basudev stream in Bastipur on Tuesday while returning home from school. Thirteen-year-old Sima Bholan managed to escape, while the bodies of eight-year-old Roshani Syangtang and 12-year-old Binita Bholan had already been recovered.

Roshani's body was found on the same day, while Binita's was recovered on Thursday.

A joint search involving Nepal Police, the Armed Police Force, local representatives, school authorities and residents continued following the incident.

The four girls had been returning from school when the sudden flood swept them away, turning their journey home into a fatal incident.

With Sumitra's body now recovered, three of the four girls swept away in the flood have died, while one survived.
