Breast-feeding week begins

Kathmandu, August 1:

A mothers’ organisation called Chhimeki, which means neighbours in Nepali, is promoting breast-feeding through a series of public events, including street dramas and other public programmes. As part of the week-long programme, Chhimeki organised a breast-feeding event at Mahadevsthan in Koteshwar-35 between 11 am and 1 pm today. The breast-feeding week falls on August 1-7. The theme for this year’s World Breast-feeding Week is “Breast-feeding: The 1st Hour - Early Initiation and exclusive breast-feeding for six months can save more than one million babies”.

Chhimeki said in a press release today that mass breast-feeding events will be organised on the office premises of Ward Number 20 and Ward Number 14 of the Kathmandu City on August 2 and 3.

Funded by Swiss Development Cooperation (SDC) and its close partner Terre des hommes, Chhimeki has been observing the breast-feeding week since 2002.
