Bridge along East-West Highway 'almost collapses', vehicular movement comes to halt

NAWALPARASI: The Jayashree Bridge along the East-West Highway nearly collapsed in Gaindakot of Nawalparasi on Monday evening, blocking the vehicular movement along the longest highway of the nation.

The bridge over the Jayashree stream along the Butwal-Narayangadh road section of the highway has fell down at around 6:45 pm this evening.

Gaindakot-based Area Police Post said heavy traffic caused the collapse.

Vehicles heading toward different parts of the nation were struck on both sides of the bridge since this afternoon.

Butwal-based engineer at the Department of Roads, Ram Narayan Yogi, said it is impossible to resume the vehicular operation as the bridge has tilted from the middle.

Mentioning that opening diversions is also not immediately possible, police said the road operation can resume by Tuesday evening.
