CA polls not likely this year: Sherchan

Ramechhap, June 8:

Jana Morcha Nepal (JMN) chairperson Amik Sherchan today expressed doubts that the constituent assembly (CA) polls would be held by November.

Speaking at an interaction organised by the JMN’s Ramechhap chapter in Manthali, Sherchan

said the CA polls are

related to the unification of the Nepali Congress and the Nepali Congress-Democratic.

Saying that foreign forces are becoming active in Nepali politics, Sherchan said there was no hope of holding the CA polls by November.

The 12-point agreement between the seven political parties and the Maoists should be implemented and the Maoists should return all seized property before the CA polls are held, he said, adding, “If the CA polls are not held on time, the king will get a chance to become active again.” He added that the king was seeking the support of foreign forces.

He pointed out that the eight political parties are responsible for the delay in holding of CA polls and that they should collectively apologise to the people. Sherchan also said that the JMN was in favour of the parliament declaring the nation a republic and stressed the need for strengthening the unity of the eight parties.

Commenting on the activities of the Young Communist League (YCL), he said that problems are being created due to a very large number of people in the Maoist youth wing. He added that some activities of the YCL are undesirable and that the organisation should amend its conduct.
