RAUTAHAT, NOVEMBER 17
Police fired shots into the air after a clash ensued between the supporters of two independent candidates in Katahariya of Rautahat last night.
A dispute and subsequent clash had broken out between the supporters of Rautahat Constituency-3 House of Representatives independent candidate Om Prakash Jayasawal and Provincial Assembly independent candidate Kundan Kushwaha at Katahariya bazaar at about 9:30pm.
The clash ended after a team of Armed Police Force and Nepal Police from Area Police Office of Katahariya fired three shots in the air and four rounds of tear gas.
According to police, a dispute had started after supporters of the two sides, all in a drunken stupor, hurled verbal abuse at each other. "As the crowd of infuriated supporters started to fight, we tried to convince them not to fight but to no avail as they started raining stones and glass shards on us. We had to fire tear gas and shots in the air," police said.
Both the sides accuse each other of distributing money and booze to influence the election result.
