Call to draft constitution sans gender bias
Kathmandu, November 18:
Constituent Assembly Chairman Subash Chandra Nembang today said it was up to the women
represented in the CA to write a gender-sensitive constitution.
“Nobody can stop the new constitution from ensuring women’s rights. The women lawmakers should not doubt whether or not a constitution of their wish will be written. It is up to them to write a gender-friendly constitution,” Nembang added.
Inaugurating a discussion on issues regarding gender equality and women’s rights here today,
Nembang said women did not need to beg for rights anymore. “They have reached a position where they can ensure their rights themselves,” he added.
In the two-day programme, women CA members and individuals and organisations advocating
gender equality and women rights will discuss a draft statute jointly prepared by the Ministry of Women and Social Welfare and United Nations Development Fund for Women.
