Call to introduce land use policy

Kathmandu, January 2

Nepal Communist Party (NCP) leaders and former ministers have suggested to the government to categorise land on scientific basis and introduce a land use policy.

Leaders, including former prime minister and NCP leader Madhav Kumar Nepal, made the suggestion during a discussion organised by Minister of Land Management, Cooperatives and Poverty Alleviation Padma Aryal today.

The leaders also urged the government to come up with a comprehensive policy that would also address the problems of landless squatters and resolve problems of land plotting.

Former prime minister Nepal said that there should be no landless people in the country when the Nepal Communist Party (NCP ) was leading the government. He also urged the government not to carry out development activities without assessing the damage it would do to the environment.

Minister Aryal said that she would prepare a plan based on the suggestions and added that the Land Use Act was under consideration in the Cabinet.

Nepal Communist Party (NCP) leaders Keshav Badal, Haribol Gajurel and Prabhu Shah, among others, had also put forth their views regarding landless people during the discussion.
