Campaign against child marriage

Bhojpur, June 27

Children in Sankhuwasabha are all set to launch a campaign against child marriage in the district very soon.

A decision to this effect was taken at a town-level gathering of children in Khandbari Municipality.

‘Girls Campaign Against Child Marriage’ campaign Assistant-coordinator Sabina Pokhrel vowed to stand up against child marriage. “I’m firm in my decision not to enter myself and others into matrimony until the age eligible for marriage,” said Pokhrel.

Along with 18 others of the campaign, she endorsed a commitment paper issued following the conclusion of a two-day meeting today. “As the increase in child marriage has got to do with lack of awareness, there’s no option other than to run programmes to spread awareness in society,” she said.

The participants of the meeting called on local levels to make their service delivery system child-friendly.

They also committed to eliminating and minimising all sorts of discrimination, exploitation and abuse happening against children.

The programme was organised by Makalu Trishakti Samuha Nepal in coordination with District Children’s Club Coordination Committee of Sankhuwasabha with assistance of Khandbari Municipality.

The meeting has also formed a 15-member town children network under the chairmanship of Birendra Karki.
