Campus chiefs smeared soot
BIRATNAGAR: Activists of Madhesi Students' Forum-Democratic today smeared soot on the faces of the campus chief and assistant campus chief of Degree Campus Biratnagar.
After storming the offices of campus chief Harihar Bhandari and assistant campus chief Tunraj Bhattarai at 8 am, the students coloured the faces of their teachers black and humiliated.
According to Imran Ansari, campus unit chairman of the student body affiliated with Madhesi Janadhikar Forum (Democratic) led by Deputy Prime Minister Bijay Kumar Gachhedar, the duo was smeared tar since they had not made the selection of lecturers inclusive. Earlier, the campus had announced eight vacancies and invited applications from suitable candidates. He said only the supporters of Nepali Congress, UCPN-Maoist and CPN-UML had been appointed and lecturers belonging to their party were excluded. The Madhesi students had recommended the name of Jayabendra Jha.
Chandra Adhikari, Suman Gurung, Ramchandra Koirala, Binod Adhikari, Rajendra Koirala, Hom Baskota, Shantila Paudel and Dan Kumar were appointed to the posts of lecturers after competing due procedures on August 3.
The students' body had locked up the campus chief Bhandari in his office for three hours on July 23 after the latter failed to give in to their demands. They also padlocked the administration office since July 27 when their demand was not fulfilled.
Following today's misdemeanour, the agitating students also padlocked the office of the professors' union indefinitely. They have warned of intensified protests if their demands were not met soon.
