KATHMANDU, MAY 19
An Indian visually impaired woman made history this morning by successfully summiting Mt Everest.
Chhonzin Angmo, from Kinnaur in Himachal Pradesh, reached the top of the world's highest peak at around 8:34 am, becoming the first blind Indian woman to scale Everest, according to Mingma Dorchi Sherpa, Chairman of Pioneer Adventure.
"Angmo reached the summit point as part of the Pioneer Everest Expedition, with support from her guides Dandu Sherpa and Om Gurung," Mingma Dorchi said over the phone from base camp.
Despite being blind, the 29-year-old climber completed a basic mountaineering course and had already climbed several peaks in Ladakh.
Her successful ascent is marked by overcoming fears, building trust in her team, and setting new personal benchmarks, Sherpa shared. She had also climbed Lobuche before departing for Everest bid.
Having lost her sight at the age of eight due to a reaction to medication, Angmo continually pushes boundaries from scaling the world's highest peak, according to him.
