China takes exception to Oli’s speech

KATHMANDU: China has expressed ‘unhappiness’ with Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s speech in the Parliament on Sunday, where he stated that he would soon pay a visit to the northern neighbour.

“Chinese authorities have expressed dissatisfaction with Oli’s speech in the Parliament. They are of the view that making such public statements without even finalising the date for the visit was not good practice,” a senior minister told THT. Oli plans to visit China in June after presentation of the budget for the next fiscal on May 29.

China had extended an invitation to Oli for the Boao Forum for Asia on April 8 to 11, but Oli could not attend the event, as the dates coincided with his state visit to India.

Sources said Oli was likely to visit China around the 18th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation scheduled for June 9 to 10.
