Committee formed to investigate Kavre jeep accident

A committee has been set up to investigate Kavre jeep accident that claimed three persons, including a senior police officer.

Deputy Inspector General of Nepal Police Sushil Kumar Bhandari and two others died when a jeep they were riding veered off the road at Bhangetar in Mandan Deupur Municipality-6 on Saturday.

The five-member committee formed yesterday is led by Deputy Superintendent of Police Dipak Giri at Kavre District Police Office and has District Traffic Police in-charge Inspector Nishesh Chapagain and three other police officers as members.

The jeep owner and driver Pradip Bogati, who sustained minor injuries in the accident, has been sent to custody, informed District Police Office Kavre chief Superintendent of Police Rabiraj Khadka.

While Deputy Inspector General Bhandari had died while being rushed for treatment, other two identified as journalist Jeevan Parajuli and  Province-3 coordinator of Trade Union Congress Binod Karki died on the spot when the jeep fell some 200 metres off the road.

Among the three who were injured, former Deputy Superintendent of Police Binod Gautam is still undergoing treatment at Kathmandu-based  Grande Hospital.

Jeep driver and another person Dhanaraj Puri, who sustained minor injuries, have already been discharged from the hospital.

The accident took place when the police team was returning after inspecting a sand mine owned by Puri in Baunedihi, Mandan Deupur Municipality. Bhandari’s kin on Tuesday filed an application at the DPO Kavre seeking a fair investigation into the incident.
