KATHMANDU, APRIL 23
The Ministry of Communication and Information Technology has issued a stern warning against the spread of baseless, false and misleading information through online media and social media platforms, saying such content is creating public confusion and spreading negative sentiment in society.
The ministry said it has taken serious note of the increasing circulation of fabricated content across various online and social media channels in recent times and urged all news publishers, institutions and individuals not to publish or disseminate any news or information that has not been verified by official sources.
It warned that individuals or organisations found publishing or distributing baseless, false or misleading content will be identified and prosecuted under prevailing law, including the Electronic Transactions Act and other related legislation.
The ministry also appealed to the general public not to participate in or assist in spreading such content, and urged social media users to verify the authenticity of any material before sharing it from their personal accounts.
The ministry has also urged those who have information about the source of such false or misleading news, or who wish to file a complaint or provide additional details, on the official "Social Media Complaint Portal" on the ministry's website or contact the ministry directly.
