Conflict can intensify if CA polls are delayed: Leaders

Kathmandu, December 1:

Political leaders today cautioned that Nepal could undergo an “intensified” conflict if the constituent assembly elections are delayed, and the demands of the Terai Jantantrik Morcha and the Kirat Workers’ Party were not addressed on time.

“It is high time that we should changed our attitude to avert conflict in future,” Nepali Congress (Democratic) leader Dr Narayan Khadka said at an interaction here today organised by the Sachet Nagarik Samaj. He cautioned that the country could enter into intensified conflict if elections to CA were not held.

Vice-president of the Nepal Sadbhawana Party (Anandidevi), Bharat Bimal Yadav emphatically suggested that issues raised by the Terai Janatantrik Morcha and Kirat Workers’ Party be addressed on time. “The government must seriously hold dialogue with them so that the recently restored peace is not disturbed,” he said.

Nepali Congress central working committee member Arjun Narsingh KC said permanent peace is vital in an inclusive democracy. “Permanent peace and inclusive democracy is what was people have aspired during the Janandolan II,” KC said, assuring that converting Nepal into a secular state would not make any adverse impact.

Leader of the United Left Front (ULF) CP Mainali said the cut-off date (1990) to acquire Nepali citizenship is an “understanding” between the eight political parties (SPA and the Maoists) to resolve the citizenship problem, which Mainali argued should not be continued in future by adopting another cut-off date.
