Constable guns down DSP, flees

Deputy Superintendent of the Armed Police Force, Gam Bahadur Gurung, was shot dead last night by his own subordinate, head constable Kul Bahadur Budhathoki. Gurung, who was working as the acting chief of the APF’s Jwalamai barrack at Bhaluwang, was killed on the spot, according to Dang-based top security official. Gurung was a resident of Kaski. The security official, requesting anonymity, said Budhathoki fled immediately after killing Gurung.

Meanwhile, officers in the APF’s 19th Brigade based at Tulsipur has claimed that Gurung was killed in an encounter with Maoists, adding the encounter ensued after the Maoists attacked the security forces. The 19th Brigade said the security forces led by Gurung fought the Maoists for nearly half an hour. Brigade sources also claimed there were heavy casualties on the Maoists’ side.

The encounter spot is located about 48 kilometers south-east of the district headquarters, Bhaluwang. According to locals, the firing continued for several minutes.
