SIRAHA, SEPTEMBER 20

CPN-MC standing committee member Lilamani Pokharel has said that the present constitution of the country is a document of compromise.

"Though the constitution we've written isn't exactly what we wished it to be, we've been able to promulgate it through consensus, which must be considered as an achievement," said the CPN-MC leader, speaking at an orientation on 'The Current Constitution and our View' organised by the party's Dhangadhimai Town Committee on the occasion of Constitution Day today.

"Yes, the present statute isn't perfect but we've so far enshrined federalism, secularism and many rights for women, Dalits, and backward communities through this charter.

Let's protect what we've gained so far and move ahead for more rights," he added.

The leader pointed out that corruption in the country had exacerbated due to the parliamentary system in practice now and noted that an amendment is, therefore, imperative.

"Under the existing election system, an MP spends up to 150 million rupees to win the election. What can we expect from an MP to do then: work for the nation sincerely or try to make up for the huge amount he spent to win the election?"
