Contractors speed up construction work fearing arrest
LAMJUNG: Two construction companies that had repeatedly ignored calls for timely construction of bridges in the district have now resumed building process. The contractors returned to work following the government’s warning to take action against companies failing to reach construction deadlines.
Builders Sapana-Jaybaba JV had exhibited extreme negligence in constructing a bridge connecting Besi Sahar-11 and Dordi-4, the foundation stone for which had been laid seven years ago.
The company ignored multiple requests made by the Road Department, local government authorities, members of parliament and the locals to finish work on time. The bridge should have been completely built and handed over to the stakeholders by June 2013.
However, the contractors straightened up and resumed remaining work after the district administration issued orders to search for the 'absconding' builders, said Chief District Officer Jhaka Nath Dhakal.
The delay in completion of the bridge over the Dordi River has affected four hydropower projects currently being built in that corridor.
Likewise, another company, Adhikari Nirman Sewa that had also abandoned bridge construction over Borang River in Rainas Municipality, has now resumed building works following the Home Ministry’s directive.
The deadline for completion of the bridge was June last year.
Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa recently pledged to take action against contractors delaying construction works across the country and issued directives along the lines.
