Cops interfere in peaceful demonstration

JHAPA, DECEMBER 16

Police interfered in a peaceful demonstration which demanded that the border be reopened in Kakarbhitta of Jhapa, today.

Locals, along with hotel and tourism entrepreneurs of the district, had staged the peaceful demonstration at the initiative of the Hotel Entrepreneurs’ Association Mechinagar and Travel Association Jhapa.

Participants in the demonstration had marched through the Mechi Bridge and Bus Park area before staging a sit-in on the road.

“There were more than 100 persons participating in the peaceful demonstration seeking the opening of the border that had been closed for around nine months,” said Hotel Entrepreneurs’ Association Mechinagar Chairperson Suresh Kumar Shrestha.

“Police, however, interfered with our programme and mistreated the participants,” he added.

Participants in the demonstration have condemned police ‘high-handedness’ and interference.

Hotel Entrepreneurs Association Mechinagar Chairperson Suresh Kumar Shrestha and Travel Association Jhapa Chair Nir Bahadur Karki warned of a stern protest should the closed border not be opened soon.
