Court slaps jail term on corrupt bank officials

Kathmandu, February 25:

The Special Court today slapped a one-and a-half-year jail term on the manager of Rastriya Banijya Bank’s Gajuri branch, Saroj Prasad Dhungana, and imposed a Rs 4 million fine while convicting him of corruption. A three-judge bench of justices Govinda Prasad Parajuli, Rana Bahadur Bam and Bhoopdhoj Adhikary passed the sentence.

The bench also sentenced assistant manager Ganesh Bahadur Rayamajhi to one year in jail and imposed a Rs 4 million fine on him. Dhungana and Rayamajhi had been named accused in a case of corruption filed by the CIAA. Bank staff Pradeep KC, Jhalakman Shrestha and Naresh Kumar Pradhan were each sentenced to nine months in jail. The court imposed a Rs 4.4 million fine on Mahendra Pal Singh who siphoned off the amount in connivance with officials. Anil Chhetri was slapped with Rs 3.1m for withdrawing money the same way.
