KATHMANDU, JANUARY 3

The Madhav Kumar Nepal-led CPN (United Socialist) party is going to speed up the unity process with left-wing forces.

Deputy General Secretary and Head of Propaganda Department Jagannath Khatiwada informed that the party's Politburo meeting today gave responsibility to the party's central secretariat to take concrete initiatives on left-wing unity, cooperation and building a front.

The party has become a prisoner of indecision regarding the government. The standing committee and politburo meeting that was held for four days failed to form any opinion about the government. Instead, it became a prisoner of indecision and handed over the responsibility to the secretariat.

The CPN (US) decided to carry out the unity process by negotiating and communicating with other parties and groups from the Janata Samajwadi Party-Nepal. "We are trying to unite all those on the left and move forward under our leadership, not only JSP-N but also other parties," said Khatiwada. He said he would discuss with all of them saying he would unite with CPN-UML, Maoists and other left wing people and small groups.

"It can be individuals or small groups, but we will move in this direction," said Khatiwada. Earlier, the CPN-UML also held discussions with leaders including left wing leader Ghanshyam Bhusal. But despite discussions with Bhusal, he has not decided whether to join Samajwadi Party.

Khatiwada said more than 120 central members did not vote in the meeting, and although there was a statement that action should be taken against them, there was no fact or record of it. "We do not have the facts and records to confirm this," said Khatiwada. But in the Politburo meeting, the leaders raised questions saying that secretary Ramkumari Jhakri and leader Mukund Neupane were involved in activities against the party policy. At that time, they were of the opinion that more than 120 central members should be investigated as they did not vote in the last election.

The Unified Socialists have adopted a policy of silence with regard to the current coalition government. It has adopted a policy of keeping silent saying that no proposal has been received so far to support the Dahal-led government.

If there is a proposal, the CPN-US will only go to the government after its terms are met. "If a proposal comes, decision will be taken after studying the proposal," said Khatiwada.

"The government is in majority so it does not need to discuss with us." Said Khatiwada.

Senior CPN (US) leader Jhalanath Khanal said the party should enforce one personone-post rule in all structures of the party committee.

The CPN (US) has 10 seats in the 275-member House of Representatives. Its leaders are miffed at Dahal for not consulting them before deciding to break away from the Nepali Congress-led coalition and join hands with the CPN-UML.
