KATHMANDU, APRIL 12

The Parsa District Administration Office has imposed a curfew in select areas of Birgunj Metropolitan City from Saturday evening, citing security concerns following a clash during a religious procession.

According to an order issued by Chief District Officer Ganesh Aryal, the curfew will remain in effect from 6:30 PM today until 12 noon tomorrow. The directive, issued under Section 6 (Ka) of the Local Administration Act, 2028 BS, prohibits all movement, gatherings, assemblies, protests, and sit-ins within the designated curfew zone.

The restricted area has been demarcated as follows:

East: Bhediyahi Chowk (Ward 15)

West: Sirsiya Bridge (Ward 25)

North: Gandak Chowk (Ward 14)

South: Shankaracharya Gate (Ward 16)

The administration has urged the public to comply with the curfew order to help maintain peace and security.

Tensions reportedly flared on Saturday afternoon during a Hanuman Jayanti procession at Chapkaiya Chowk. Participants of the Shobha Yatra, held to mark the birth anniversary of Lord Hanuman, claimed they were pelted with stones. Meanwhile, others alleged that some members of the procession behaved in a provocative manner, leading to the confrontation.

During the clash, a few shops were reportedly set on fire, and several individuals-including both civilians and police personnel-were injured.

Following the incident, security has been stepped up across Birgunj, with a significant deployment of personnel aimed at preventing further escalation.

Authorities have appealed to all residents to remain indoors and cooperate with law enforcement during the curfew period.
